DIGITAL NEWS & MARKETS EXPERIENCE

The Wall Street Journal

The Journal’s digital edition: markets, What’s News, audio, puzzles, and a mobile app built for people who need the story before the meeting.

The Wall Street Journal is Dow Jones’s flagship newsroom, and its product is no longer only a newspaper. Subscribers read on WSJ.com, in global digital editions, and in the WSJ app: live market data inside stories, alerts, a What’s News feed, saved articles, Read to Me audio, and the daily crossword and sudoku. This case study is that digital experience.

Engagement Overview

The app is published by Dow Jones & Company and is built around a simple promise: know first. Readers get breaking news, section coverage from politics and markets to lifestyle, real-time quotes, and the ability to follow journalists. MyWSJ collects what they save. Offline reading covers the commute. Read to Me turns articles into audio. Puzzles are in the same app as the news, which is a deliberate habit loop, not a separate product. On the web, WSJ Markets is the quote and chart surface for stocks, bonds, currencies, crypto, and commodities, linked from the same navigation as the news sections.

Goal: Keep subscribers inside one Journal habit across the morning paper, the trading day, and the phone in between.

Approach: Design the day, not a single screen. Morning is What’s News and the digital edition. The trading day is market data embedded in the story, not only on a separate terminal. The in-between moments are alerts, audio, and puzzles. Search has to cover news, market data, opinion, video, and audio, because a Journal reader rarely wants only one of those.

A newsroom, a market-data product, and a daily habit in one subscription

The Journal has to be fast enough for a breaking headline and deep enough for a weekend read. It also has to be a markets tool. Those used to be different products with different backends. The digital Journal pulls news, quotes, audio, and puzzles into one account, with personalization that still respects a newsroom’s editing, not only an algorithm.

Expected Business Impact

One subscription covers the app, WSJ.com, and the digital edition of WSJ. Magazine.
Market figures travel with the article, so a reader does not leave the story to check a quote.
Audio and offline reading extend the same journalism into commutes and travel.
Personal alerts and followed journalists make the feed feel chosen, not only published.
